Where is the safety guidance?

Postby city_cyclist on Tue Sep 30, 2008 1:40 pm

It's great there are all of these initiatives to encourage people to cycle and make the process easier. As a cyclist I'm always encouraging friends and colleagues to pickup their bikes and cycle into work.

One of the key things I think is missing across the government websites is basic cycling safety guidance.

There's lots of research available on the socio-economics and demographics of current and prospective cyclist. In fact, this reasearch tells us that the number 1 reason for not cycling in the CBD is safety.

But the basic information - how do I look after myself when cycling, which is the main concern people have, is apparently lacking.

Can anyone help advise on what we should be looking for.

Totally agree,
It is like you have to learn on the job - and I know many stories where a close shave or bad experience has shut down a new riders confidence - never to ride (on the road) again.

This is the best national initiative; http://www.austcycle.com.au/
But often other groups provide training courses. And some BUGS provide a buddy service.

City of Sydney are providing FREE cyclist training courses on Saturday and Sunday mornings through 2009.

The Cycling in the City course is a free course available to any individual over 18 years old who is not a beginner (see below for beginner course providers). The course teaches safe, responsible and EFFECTIVE riding and is designed for people who can already ride but want confidence to ride on city streets.

BikeWise is the training provider for City of Sydney and are also available for training individuals and private groups.

Re: about BikeWise

Hi all.
BikeWise is a commuter cyclist training organisation aimed specifically at empowering anyone interested in cycling for transport.

Think 'personal training' on a bike with the emphasis on effective, safe travel. (not fitness- that will come on it's own!)

We trained and worked as Cyclist Instructors in the London where commuter training has been strongly established for a long time, and is credited in part with the resurgence of cycling in the British capital.

We started business in Sydney on our return in late 2008 and are currently working largely on a contract with City of Sydney.

We are the most experienced Commuter Training organisation in Sydney. Lead by husband and Wife team, Jo and Paddy who are accredited to the UK national standard, all of our instructors have at least 8 years experience as Sydney Commuter Cyclists as well as coaching / Instructor accreditation through Cycling Australia.

Patrick and Jo have successfully passed the AustCycle instructor course and are considering participation in that model pending some contractual fiddling.

Give us a go!

We are also available privately for 1:1 or 1:2 or groups.
